Men's Traditional Outfits

By: Loretta R. Webster

This is the first man's outfit that I made in 2007.  I worked about a year on the pieces, which included the cuffs, yoke, leggings, bandolier bag, and moccasins.  White seed beads were used to put the design of the turtle with the Tree of Life on its back on all the matching pieces. This picture was taken at the Oneida Nation powwow held over the 4th of July weekend each year.

Glengary Hat

By: Loretta R. Webster

This was my first glengary hat, made in 1994. The haudenosaunee (Iroquois) began to decorate hats traded by Scottish men who settled in their territory. Pictures I have seen are from the 18th century, and worn by men. Today, many of the hats I make are ordered by women, who wear it with their ceremonial outfit. Measurement is around the head across the forehead just above the eyebrows. 1/2 down when you order and provide colors of beads and velvet.

Man's traditional outfit

By: Loretta R. Webster

This outfit included the Gustowe hat, yoke, cuffs, aprons, leggings, moccasins, bandolier bag and shirt.  The whole outfit took about one and a half years to complete, and coordination with other artists was needed to complete the silver armbands and hatband, as well as the shirt.  Clan symbols of bear, wolf and turtle appear on different pieces of the outfit, as well as the eagle on the bandolier bag.  White beaded edging is prominent on just about every item of the outfit, which is beaded on black velvet, except for the apron which is black wool.  The red shirt has the six diamonds of the Oneida wampum belt appliqued on the front of it.  This signifies the expansion of the Iroquois Confederacy to include a sixth tribe, the Tuscaroras.

Man's Vest, cuffs

By: Loretta R. Webster

This is the vest and cuffs for an outfit that also included the aprons, leggings and moccasins.  You can see part of the Iroquois Confederacy wampum belt design on both of these pieces.  This belt reminds us of the formation of the Confederacy by five Iroquois nations (Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca).  The whole outfit took about a year to make.  White opaque beads were used for most of the beading, with purple beads used to outline the design.  The cuffs and belt designs are beaded on black velvet with purple satin around the edge.  The vest was made of elk skin.

Man's Apron, leggings, moccasins

By: Loretta R. Webster

This is part of an outfit that you can find in this section.  The edging is an old Iroquois design that has been used by porcupine quill workers and beaders for centuries.  It unfolds several images from the Creation Story, such as the row of sky domes above a straight line designating the earth; three sisters (corn, beans, squash) on the earth line & under the sky domes; the night sun (moon) above the sky domes with celestial trees on either side. Everything has black wool as the base material.

The moccasins are made of elk skin, with the black velvet used as the base material for the beadwork.  On the cuffs you can see part of the Iroquois Confederacy Wampum Belt which denotes the unification of five nations (Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga) under one government.

Bear clan apron and leggings

By: Loretta R. Webster

Traditional apron and leggings for social, powwow or ceremonial use.  The edging designs are Iroquois style, although many eastern and Great Lakes tribal members have chosen it for their outfits.  Today, there is a lot of borrowing of ideas from tribe to tribe across North America, and this includes their outfits.

Raised beadwork is on black wool; glass beads are used for the entire design; satin ribbon was used.  The bear design was furnished by the owner of this outfit.
